THE Clinical Reserach Feasibility Funds Award (CReFF)
The UCI GCRC has allocated $1 0,000 Clinical Research Feasibility Funds (CReFF) Award for Academic Year 2004-05 to support a clinical research project at the UCI GCRC by young faculty. and $25 ,000 to support a medical student for a year of clinical research. The purpose of the funding is to support translational research on human subjects by promising young investigators.
1. E ligibility
Young investigators at UCI (junior faculty at a rank equal to or less than Assistant Professor ) or medical student s (usually after completion of the first 2 years of medical school) are eligible to apply. Proposals from senior faculty will be considered if they demonstrate a change in research career path.
2. Proposals
The proposal should include:
Institutional compliance committee approval (human subjects and animal subjects) for the submitted proposal , if pertinent, must be obtained before activation of the award.
3. Evaluation of the proposals
Proposals will be evaluated by a sub-committee of the GCRC Advisory Committee (GAC). Decisions made by the CReFF and Mentored Medical Student Program committee will be presented to the full GAC for final approval. Review criteria will include, but not be limited to, the following: opinion of overall scientific quality and innovation, relevance of project to GCRC goals, summary of budget request, and animal/human subject concerns.
4. Deadlines for Submission
August 1, 2004

5. Award Date
September 1, 2004 (for proposals submitted in August)
6. FINAL REPORT
At the end of the project awardees will submit a final report to the GCRC on their findings. Any resulting grants or publications in peer-reviewed journals will acknowledge the support of the UCI GCRC grant (see Section 7 Publications/Presentations).
The GCRC must submit an annual progress report to the NIH. This report includes a listing of publications generated during the grant year from GCRC-supported research and a summary of results for all GCRC-supported projects. GCRC information needs are dictated by the NIH General Clinical Research Centers Program record-keeping and reporting requirements.
You will receive a request for this information each January. Your thorough and prompt response to this yearly request will help assure continued NIH support for the GCRC.
7. PUBLICATIONS/PRESENTATIONS
Our sponsoring agency, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), has requested that any publication or presentation resulting from studies conducted on the GCRC or with GCRC funds carry the following footnote:
"This investigation was supported by Public Health Service research grant M01 RR00827 from the National Center for Research Resources."
Citing the above GCRC grant number in your publications and presentations have an impact on continued NIH support of the GCRC here at the University of California, Irvine and we ask that you give special attention to this matter.
