Mission Statement

The mission of the Bionutrition Research Area is to provide an efficient, quality nutrition unit within the GCRC. Services include protocol-focused nutrition component development, meal and snack preparation, staff interaction with research participants (e.g. diet intake, food records). Activities support inpatient and outpatient research, generate nutrition hypotheses for new research proposals and train staff and students in clinical nutrition research.

Bionutrition Responsibilities

  • To assist investigators in the nutritional aspects of research protocol design.

  • To complete, analyze, and report nutrition research data for protocols including data base design and data entry.

  • To assess and serve the needs of research participants according to research protocol methods.

  • To provide diet evaluation and instruction to study participants.

  • To operationalize the nutrition component of research protocols with appropriate staff and equipment.

  • To follow established procedures in the selection, purchase, preservation, and serving of quality food.

  • To meet all National Sanitation Foundation regulations pertaining to food production, distribution, and infection control.

  • To begin a new database with the "Healthy Eating Index" for standard use among investigators.

  • To collaborate on nutrition-related research protocols with other GCRCs.
